Class A Highway Worker I Commerce City, Central Hudson Locations Job

We are seeking a candidate to perform a variety of semi-skilled maintenance and repair duties in support of assigned County Department, Division or program; and to provide support to assigned supervisory staff. Generally, work will be performed in the Public Rights of Way (ROW) for the purpose of maintaining and repairing County owned or maintained infrastructure.

Examples of Duties for Success
Participate in activities related to the maintenance and construction of roads, bridges, and drainage ways by hauling gravel and asphalt; graveling roadways, asphalt removal, resurfacing, and patching; culvert maintenance and installation, snow and ice control, stockpiling, earthwork, bridge repair, and construction; dust abatement, crack sealing, patching, and other road surface maintenance activities; roadside mowing, and litter pick-up.
Operate highway construction equipment including tandem trucks, rollers, compactors, oil distributor, loaders, V plows, sewer jet, bobtails, large loaders, small dozers, small backhoes, and roadside mowers.
Load and unload equipment, supplies, and other materials from trucks and other vehicles.
Direct flow of traffic around construction and/or maintenance projects; erect and remove traffic control devices used during maintenance and/or construction projects.
Operate welding and patching equipment including jack hammers, hydro-tampers, and hand tools including shovels, lutes, and rakes.
Perform minor maintenance of trucks and equipment; check and service equipment for fuel, hydraulic fluids, and oil and water levels; check tires and belts.
May read surveying grade stakes.
Maintain a variety of records; complete activity records and reports.
Perform a full range of upper and lower level highway maintenance duties.
Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned/required.
Comply with the Highway dress code.
Maintain professional conduct at all times with the public and county employees.
Maintain a safe work environment at all times.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Basic methods and techniques of construction, maintenance, and repair.
Operational characteristics of mechanical equipment and tools used in the area of work assigned.
Follow safety practices during work hours and comply with OSHA regulations.
Principles of record keeping and reporting concerning time and materials used.
Safely and effectively operate a variety of tandem axle vehicles and other equipment used in highway and road construction.
Safely and efficiently use and operate hand tools, mechanical equipment, and power tools and equipment required for assigned tasks.
Perform semi-skilled construction, maintenance, and repair work as assigned.
Perform a variety of manual tasks for extended periods of time and in all weather conditions.
Install and remove traffic control devices and directing traffic flow.
Hand tool maintenance and assisting in the routine maintenance of equipment and vehicles.
Perform heavy manual labor.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Qualifications for Success
Experience:
Six (6) months experience in civil construction work.
One (1) year experience in civil construction work, preferably in the Public Sector, including snow removal experience, is preferred.
Education and Training: High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
License or Certificate:
Employee must have a valid driver's license and provide a current copy (30 day) MVR at the time of interview.
Preferred candidate possesses a Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL), with air brake endorsement or will be required to acquire a CDL within three (3) months of employment.
Must acquire tanker endorsement and may be required to obtain a Hazmat endorsement within three (3) months of employment.
Class A CDL may be required after hire.
Must have or obtain a valid Department of Transportation (DOT) medical card.
Adams County is required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations to conduct pre-employment and ongoing random drug screens, background checks and motor vehicle record checks. Successful candidates must pass all of the above, including a DOT physical and a criminal background check.
Ability to obtain certification from the International Municipal Signal Association in the areas of Work Zone Safety and Signs and Markings, Level 1, within one year of employment or when the test cycle is available close to the one year timeframe.
Background Check: Must pass a criminal background check.

Essential duties require the following physical abilities and work environment:

Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, squat, stoop, reach, crawl, twist, climb, and lift 50 pounds; tolerate exposure to noise, outdoors, confining work space, vibration, dust, and mechanical hazards.
Availability for shift work, on-call, and stand-by call.
Mandatory overtime 24/7, including all holidays.

Pay: $35,414.08 - $40,726.19
